Waiting For The Barbarians: A Story Of Suffering

'Waiting For The Barbarians' movie could have been titled 'Waiting For The Barbaric Tortures To End'. Yes! This isn't a regular movie that you watch for fun. It is about the pain caused by imperialism and colonialism. The lead role is played by Academy Award winner Mark Rylance, and the supporting roles are played by Johnny Depp, Gana Bayarsaikhan, and Robert Pattinson.

Waiting For The Barbarians Movie Aesthetic Poster

This movie takes place during The (British) Empire, in an unknown Asian frontier outpost in the middle of a desert. Mark Rylance is the magistrate of this outpost. He hadn't visited the capital for a long time. It seems as if he had been working for such a long time that he felt as if he was more connected to this frontier than the capital. His work is his life, and the outpost is his home. Despite the desert, the life of the outpost is good. There is no enemy. And not any crime except stealing sheep! Everything was okay until Colonel Joll (Johnny Depp) arrived. This is where the suffering begins. Colonel Joll was visiting this frontier outpost for the first time. He came by for the inspection. His way of interrogation is very bizarre. He doesn't know what humanity is. He shows no mercy to the barbarians as if they weren't humans. The Colonel believes that pain is the truth. His journey to find the truth causes incurable pain. Even the magistrate becomes his victim. The magistrate's character fits in poetic cinema. Mandel (Robert Pattinson) is another cruel officer.

Johnny Depp's character is very different from his other movies, his character isn't hilarious as usual but very serious. You may not like the negative roles of Johnny Depp and Robert Pattinson, but their acting is sublime, as they said in the trailer. Mark Rylance has done a marvellous job here. Mark's character is heart-breaking, and his acting is remarkable. I liked the instrumental tunes of the movie, also the vintage cinematography. If you're a fan of poetic cinema, then you should watch this movie.
