Theo's past life isn't pretty good. Susanna is his second wife. His first wife committed suicide by drowning in a bathtub. Theo was accused of the murder, but they couldn't find any evidence against him. The case became controversial, it got on TV, he had to go through the backlash. Since then, Theo is disturbed. He is having nightmares. Theo's married life is staggering. He thinks Susanna is having an affair. He wants to fix his marriage, also he is looking for peace of mind. So he decides to go away from everything with his family.

(Spoilers ahead)

They book a luxurious holiday home somewhere in Wales. It's a mystery how they found this holiday home because Theo thinks Susanna suggested this house, but she didn't. The house is really big and nicely architected. At first, everything seems normal in the house, but there's something wrong. And paranormal activities start to happen.

The house is haunted. There used to be a devil tower where the holiday home was built. The tower's devil prisons the soul of sinners. Later they demolish the tower and build a house, but still haunted things kept happening. The cycle of demolishing and rebuilding kept going, but the devil always stayed.

'You Should Have Left' is more about family issues and dealing with the past, a psychological thriller. It contains a little mystery, which you can easily predict if you have seen enough movies. If you're looking for something scary to watch, then this movie may not fulfill your expectations because the movie doesn't justify the horror genre, except a few jumpscares. Also, if you prefer movies with happy endings, then this movie isn't for you because it doesn't have a happy ending, but it suits the movie the way it is. The movie's title makes sense in the end.

There's a metaphorical theory about this movie where the house is actually Theo's mind, and he is trapped inside, but this theory doesn't fit well.
