After Midnight: A drama movie mixed with a mysterious creature?
Shudder has announced the premiere of 'After Midnight'. After watching the trailer, it seems like an intriguing story. Jeremy Gardner, director and writer of the film, is also playing the lead role. Brea Grant (director and writer of 12 Hour Shift 2020) is shown as his mysterious girlfriend.
After Midnight (2020)
Genres: Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi
Cast: Jeremy Gardner, Brea Grant
Hank (Jeremy Gardner) is a small-town guy, he owns a bar and has inherited a big house in the woods. In the first shot where Hank is thinking about how he brought Abby (Brea Grant) to this house for the first time on her birthday, and now she has suddenly disappeared without a trace. Hank and Abby have been in a relationship for 10 years. After her disappearance, an unknown creature starts to appear every night. There are only noises of rattling and scratching in the first half. Hank's friends think that he is losing his mind. Sometimes it seems that the monster is just Hank's imagination or maybe his girlfriend is that monster, but the climax is quite unexpected.
This movie has many aesthetic flashbacks, but these flashbacks didn't help to build any narrative about their relationship. Like what happened during these 10 years! What did they argue about before she left? There are many unanswered questions.
I would say that they have made the trailer cleverly. It makes you think that the story is scary and fast-forward, but it is actually slow-paced and doesn't have too much monster. I liked the song of the trailer, it convinced me to watch this movie. I liked the hopeless-lonely character of Hank. The costume of the monster was amazing, but it didn't get enough footage.
The atmosphere of the movie is good, but you may not like the scattered story. If you're looking for something scary to watch, then this movie may not fulfil your expectation because it is not really a horror or sci-fi movie, it is most likely a drama movie.
Soundtrack You Should Listen
The Parlor - The Places Where We Bled (used in the trailer)
